Herr Wins Wild Inaugural MX-5 Cup Race at Laguna

MONTEREY, Calif. (May 7, 2006) – After starting on the pole at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Chip Herr, of Lititz, Pa., lost his early advantage, recovered and then held off BSI Racing teammate Todd Buras at the finish to win the inaugural SCCA Pro Racing SIRIUS Satellite Radio Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by Hankook race by 0.107-sec. in his No. 59 Sports Car Revolution/Mazdaspeed Mazda MX-5. Drew Staveley, of Walnut, Calif., finished third.

After Herr and second-starting Jim Daniels, of Germantown, Tenn. (specmiata.com/Team MER MX-5), cleared the first turns, Erik Stearns, of Van Buren, Ohio, went off course at Turn Three with contact-induced damage to the front of his Team MER/Dick’s Auto Salvage MX-5.

In a separate incident two turns later, third starting Jason Saini, of Fort Worth, Texas (No. 28 specmiata.com/Autobarn Mazda MX-5), spun into the gravel at Turn Five, which appeared to happen after he came together with the No. 11 Alara Racing/Driver Source MX-5, driven by Houston’s Ara Malkhassian.

The combination of the two incidents brought out the 25-lap race’s only full-course caution, but not before Daniels overtook Herr for the lead.

After racing resumed on lap four, a group of six MX-5s battled for the lead, with Herr regaining the point, followed by Malkhassian and Daniels. Malkhassian then moved into the top spot on lap five, but just as quickly gave up his lead to Staveley’s No. 2 ajsracing.com MX-5 before lap six.

Daniels then took his second tour at the top on the seventh lap, holding off the field until Malkhassian dove to his inside at Turn Five on lap 11 and took over the lead. Herr also jumped ahead of Daniels and a battle between Herr and Malkhassian ensued.

As the leaders exited turn 10 that same lap, Malkhassian appeared to get loose and Herr made light contact. Malkhassian’s car spun back to ninth, and he would later battle back to finish seventh.

From there, Herr led the final portion of the race to claim the series’ first victory.

“We came through Turn Nine or Ten, in the bowl, and [Malkhassian] came in a little hot,” Herr said. “The car was loose going in, and we thought he had it saved. I think he tried to keep his foot in it. I had Todd right behind, ready to push me because we were full throttle.

“As soon as I knew he was really loose, I hit the brakes and turned left to go into the dirt” Herr continued. “As soon as it happened, I got on the radio and said ‘I didn’t mean to do that.’ Unfortunately, when you race that close, things like that happen. I probably don’t have a mark on my car from the contact.”

Herr then acknowledged that the early part of his race was also anything but clean.

“The first couple of laps, the car was loose,” Herr said. “I ended up getting the lead back, and then went off by myself at Turn Six. It wasn’t anybody’s fault but my own. I fell back to sixth and had to refocus my thoughts. Then I just had to start clicking off good laps.”

Buras’ Sunday drive was arguably the best of the 21-car field as he made his way through the field to battle for the lead after starting shotgun on the field owning to an accident in the opening corners of qualifying. His large jump came early as he made his way up to ninth prior to the caution.

“We went into Turn One, and I saw four cars going four wide,” Buras said. “I went into the dirt, got my nose in there and right on the first lap ‘Bam!’ my toe goes about three millimeters out, and my steering wheel is cocked about 10 or 15 degrees. Then I thought ‘man, this is going to be a fun race.’

“That first yellow came out, and I think I was ninth. I passed a bunch of cars, and after the restart, the car was good and I just took my time. I just tried to be smooth with what I had.”

Though he led for a short portion of the race on lap six, Staveley’s advantage was short-lived as he went a bit wide through the corkscrew portion of the 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course, allowing Daniels by.

A later battle with Daniels ensued, with contact in the corkscrew that would send Daniels back out of the top five and leave Staveley to run for the final spot on the podium.

“Jim was sliding a little bit more than I was,” Staveley said. “I was kind of waiting because I knew I didn’t have the pace for the top two guys. I was just waiting on my time, and [Jim] made a few mistakes. That allowed me to get up with him going into the corkscrew.

“We both went in really deep, and unfortunately there was a little bit of contact. It was just one of those things. I didn’t mean for it to happen, but it did.”

After the race, Staveley was assessed a six-point penalty in the Drivers’ Championship for driver conduct.

In addition to taking the top two spots on the podium, BSI Racing swept the awards as well, with Herr turning a 1:44.281 (77.260 mph) on Lap 10 - the Hawk Hot Lap of the race, and Buras winning the Sunoco Hard Charger Award for advancing the most positions from his qualifying spot.

With the inaugural event in the books, the SCCA Pro Racing SIRIUS Satellite Radio Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by Hankook heads to Lime Rock Park, in Lakeville, Conn., for Round Two, May 29.

SIRIUS Satellite Radio Named Title Sponsor of MX-5 Cup

TOPEKA, Kan. (April 26, 2006) – SCCA Pro Racing and Mazda North American Operations announced today that SIRIUS will serve as the title sponsor of the all-new SCCA Pro Racing SIRIUS Satellite Radio Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by Hankook.

“We’re thrilled to have SIRIUS join on as a partner in the new series,” SCCA Pro Racing President Earl Knoper said. “SIRIUS brings significant brand recognition and awareness to the program, and, along with partners Mazda and Hankook Tires, we’re excited to have them on board.”

"The new MX-5 Cup is the first step on Mazda's rapidly developing professional-racing ladder," said Robert Davis, Mazda's Senior Vice President, Product Development and Quality, and the man responsible for Mazda's North American racing programs. "Budding drivers can start racing Mazda vehicles in autocross or Club Racing, graduate to the MX-5 Cup for their first professional series, move up to Grand Am competition in a Mazda RX-8 or SPEED World Challenge in a MAZDA6 and ultimately to ALMS prototype competition."

As the title sponsor, SIRIUS will have a significant presence on the cars and in the paddock, as well as benefiting from significant media and advertising support.

“We’re very pleased to be working with Mazda and the SCCA on this series,” said Rodney Pickett, Vice President Automotive OEM for SIRIUS. “The MX-5 Cup is an excellent venue to highlight the presence of SIRIUS in the automotive world, and the partnership between SIRIUS and Mazda.”

The series, which begins May 5-7 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, is the next evolution of the former Miata Cup, utilizing all-new 2006 Mazda MX-5 Miatas in a sealed-engine, fully spec class run on Hankook Ventus tires. The SCCA SIRIUS Satellite Radio Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by Hankook runs in conjunction with American Le Mans Series, CASCAR, Champ Car World Series and Grand American Road Racing for its inaugural season. All eight events will be televised, with details to be announced soon.

Additional information on the MX-5 Cup, including the full season schedule, can be found at www.mx-5cup.com. An all-new Web site will be launched soon.

2006 Mazda MX-5 Cup

AWR has been involved in the development of the new 2006 Mazda MX-5 along with MAZDASPEED and many other vendors, for the new Mazda MX-5 Cup series. The new Mazda MX-5 Cup replaces the old Mazdaspeed Miata Cup, and will exclusively feature 2006 Mazda MX-5 cars run with a spec racing kit available through Mazdaspeed. Unlike previous iterations of the Miata Cup, which featured regionalized Championships, the 2006 season will feature a full nationwide Drivers’ Championship.

AWR helped initially to develop the concept car. The concept was built to develop interest in the new series while details were sorted out.

Following the concept car, two initial race prototypes were built and raced in the 25 Hours of Thunderhill. Here, the initial roll cage design was put to the ultimate test. You never want to wreck, but we had a great first hand test of the new roll bar after one of the new MX-5's rolled four times. Read the story of the Thunderhill 25 hour race.

There are two galleries of photos at the end of the story. The first is at the track. The second is evaluating the damage back at the shop. The final roll cage, can now be purchased through RacingCages.com

SCCA MAZDA MX-5 CUP SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED

New Series Features 2006 Cars, Nationwide Championship

TOPEKA, Kan. (Dec. 30, 2005) – SCCA Pro Racing announced today six of the eight races that will make up the inaugural season of the SCCA Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by Hankook, including events in conjunction with Grand-American, CASCAR and Champ Car.

The new Mazda MX-5 Cup replaces the old Mazdaspeed Miata Cup, and will exclusively feature 2006 Mazda MX-5 cars run with a spec racing kit available through Mazdaspeed. Cars will run as convertibles, as they are sold. Unlike previous iterations of the Miata Cup, which featured regionalized Championships, the 2006 season will feature a full nationwide Drivers’ Championship.

Only fitting for the launch of the new series, the 2006 schedule begins at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (Monterey, Calif.) the weekend of May 5-7 in conjunction with the Grand-Am U.S. Sports Car Invitational.

From there, the series moves across country to compete at Lime Rock Park (Lakeville, Conn.) on the traditional Memorial Day weekend with Grand-Am, May 26-29.

Two weeks later, it’s north of the border for a June 17-19 run with CASCAR at Mosport International Raceway (Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada). One week later, June 23-25, the series completes its busy first half of the season at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (Lexington, Ohio) for the Grand-Am EMCO Gears Classic weekend.

After a mid-summer break, in which one event will be added at a later date, the series travels across the Rocky Mountains for the September 1-2 Grand-Am Sunchaser Labor Day event at Miller Motorsports Park, in Tooele, Utah.

After two weeks off, the MX-5 Cup travels to Elkhart Lake, Wis., to join the Champ Car World Series at Road America Sept. 22-24.

The series’ eighth, and final, race will be announced shortly.

“We’re very excited about the new series as it takes the old Miata Cup to the next level,” SCCA Pro Racing Acting President Garret Mudd said. “The initial six races we’ve been able to finalize are outstanding events, and we’re very close to finalizing the last two races. In the coming weeks, the schedule will be complete.”

The SCCA Mazda MX-5 Cup will provide an affordable, entry-level nationwide professional series whereby drivers compete in identically outfitted vehicles. As before, all components for the cars will be sold directly through MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development, which also supports the program monetarily with contingency awards to successful drivers.

Mechanically, all MX-5 Cup cars will remain essentially stock, as delivered from the dealer, with only bolt-on modifications to the intake and exhaust systems. While the stock MX-5 Miata produces 170-hp, it is expected that an MX-5 Cup car will produce in excess of 200-hp. All MX-5 Cup vehicles will be equipped with a six-speed manual transmission and may be run with the optionally available limited-slip rear differential.

Suspension will incorporate a fully-adjustable coil-over kit with double-adjustable shock absorbers and specified spring rates, as well as adjustable anti-roll bars front and rear. All cars will be required to run on series-sponsor Hankook Ventus DOT-approved race tires, and will use a 17x8” wheel of a specified weight – again, to level the field and minimize costs. Additionally, brake pads, fluid and lines will be upgraded to racing components.

All MX-5 Cup cars will run with full safety equipment, including an eight-point roll-cage welded into the car, a racing seat, racing seatbelts and will incorporate a fire-extinguishing system.
